How Being Apart of a Student-Led Charity in University has Impacted my Life

When I first came across Bags of Promise, I was immediately inspired by the impact that the organization had, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I submitted my application to become a part of the team, and I have had an amazing experience ever since. Being a part of a student-led charity in university has impacted my life in so many ways. I have been able to see first-hand the impact my team and I have made on our community, which has been extremely fulfilling. There is something so special about seeing what you have been working towards come to life; it is so rewarding to hear from the shelter that the youth enjoyed the backpacks we donated. Knowing that I am contributing to a cause larger than myself has brought me a sense of joy and purpose, and seeing the struggles of others and actively working to make a positive impact on their lives has profoundly changed the way I see the world.

My involvement in Bags of Promise has also provided me with an opportunity to take on a leadership role. During the 2022/2023 school year, I was a service officer, where I worked directly with shelters to provide them with bags through fundraising and other service initiatives. I loved this experience because it was very hands-on, and, again, very rewarding. In April, an opportunity opened up to become the Director of the Guelph Chapter. I knew I wanted to do more, so I took on the role, and I’m so glad I did. Being in a leadership role has taught me so many skills that I will take with me far beyond university, and I have also learned so much about myself. I have learned the importance of time management, problem-solving skills, and how to be a good communicator. These are skills that are necessary in all aspects of life, not just in a university setting.

Finally, throughout this experience, I have had the opportunity to work with the most amazing people. I am so thankful for the Bags of Promise team. The Guelph Chapter as well as those at Bags of Promise Kingston have been so amazing. Stepping into a bigger leadership role seemed daunting at times, but I have felt so supported by other team members, and have had such a positive experience.

My experiences with Bags of Promise will stay with me long after university, and I am so very grateful for all the people I have met and the things we have accomplished!
